Abstract
The cardiovascular system (heart, vessels, blood cells) begins to form during the third week of development. At the beginning of the fourth week (22 days), a primitive ‘ebb and flow’ circulation has been established; by the end of the fourth week (28 days), the blood has begun to circulate, regularly and unidirectionally, through the embryonic and extraembryonic (placental) vessels.
