Abstract

Development of the upper portion of the respiratory system is closely associated with formation of the face (external nares), stomodeum (nasal cavities) and cephalic levels of the pharyngeal foregut (nasopharynx); the lower respiratory passages (larynx, trachea, bronchi) and lungs develop from a respiratory primordium originating from the ventral wall of the pharynx.
