Abstract

The 60-plus years of the Showa era (1926–1989) were filled with events and upheavals unprecedented in the nation’s history. Parliamentary government declined early in the era, pushing the nation along the path toward a totalitarian state, eventually leading to the Manchurian Incident, the war with China and finally into World War II.
