Curve Fitting with Linear Regression

  • Robert G. Parks

Abstract

With test data it is often necessary to determine a relationship between the two sets of numbers, for interpolation and extrapolation. It is possible to graph the data as linear, semi-log or log plots to determine the equation and constants. The XY line then is a visual estimate of the average point positions. A more accurate method is to determine the equation of the graph of data statistically by using linear regression. The linear regression method can be used not only for linear data but for any type of curve that can be rewritten in a linear form.
