Abstract

Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) is a common clinical problem, with most goiters being of nodular pattern type. Radionuclide or ultrasound imaging of the thyroid are sufficiently accurate to eliminate the need for surgical exploration in most cases. Since the mid-1970s, fine needle aspiration (FNA) has become a highly cost-effective diagnostic test for thyroid nodules.1 Solitary nonfunctioning “cold” nodules raise a high suspicion of cancer.
