Abstract

The Venezuelan investigator Gioconda de San Blas recently pointed out that medical mycology is the “Cinderella of microbiological science.” What she means is that this branch of science is approached in a rather stepmotherly fashion, both in teaching and in research. This is not a characteristic peculiar to only certain countries: it is a worldwide deficiency that causes physicians and other health professionals to ignore the usefulness of mycological training in solving problems of daily practice.
