Abstract
Tandern duplications served as the basis for some of the central concepts in genetics that emerged from scutiny of maize. The work of L. J. Stadler on the R locus contributed to current thinking on spontaneous mutation, recombination, and divergence of tissue-specific expression (e.g., Stadler 1946; Stadler and Emmerling 1956). Work on the A locus by J. Laughnan gave rise to the concept of intrachromosomal recombination involving tandem duplications (Laughnan 1949).
