Abstract
Transposable elements have been useful in the identification and cloning of genes that were previously inaccessible by other cloning methods. In maize, three transposable element systems have been utilized for transposon tagging: Activator/Dissociation, Suppressormutator (Enhancer/Inhibitor), and Robertson’s Mutator. Each system has inherent advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of system depends on the tagging approach taken, the genomic position and the expression of the gene sought, as well as the stocks available for tagging.
