Abstract
Tropical medicine emerged as a recognized medical and scientific specialty at the beginning of the twentieth century, having evolved during European (and to a much lesser degree, American) colonialization of the tropics. The diseases encountered by newcomers to the tropics were as fascinating as they were terrifying stimulating colonial physicians and scientists to record carefully their observations and experiments, and often to share this new information in letters to colleagues in Liverpool, London, Paris, Hamburg, Antwerp, and other European centers of learning and commerce. Thus, there evolved the first societies devoted to advances in tropical medicine; for example, the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene was founded in the United Kingdom in 1907, shortly after the establishment of schools of tropical medicine in Liverpool and London.
