Abstract

The following two sections present the rules governing programmer-chosen names and free source form as dictated by the Fortran 90 standard. These rules are fundamental to every example in this tutorial. But it should be noted that the Fortran 90 free source form is not backwardly compatible with FORTRAN 77. This issue is dealt with in the new standard by provisions for an alternate Fortran 90 source form, which is described in Appendix D.
