Abstract

Robert Gross stated that his first ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus in 1938 “formed the opening wedge in the surgical attack on congenital cardiovascular anomalies.”9 Ligation or division of the ductus has become a simple procedure associated with almost no morbidity or mortality. However, the complication of operative hemorrhage from a torn or insufficiently sutured ductus is so serious that the operation should always be approached with respect, proper planning, and meticulous technique.
