Trimedyne OmniPulse 2.1 μm Holmium:YAG Laser for Arthroscopic Laser Surgery

Book cover Arthroscopic Laser Surgery

Abstract

The OmniPulse holmium laser operating at a wavelength of 2.1 μm is a versatile orthopaedic surgical tool, combining high ablation efficiency with conventional rugged fiberoptics. The 2.1 μm wavelength is highly absorbed in tissue with a penetration depth of approximately 0.4 mm (Esterowitz et al., 1986). Furthermore, fiberoptic handpieces carrying this wavelength can be utilized in a saline-filled environment, like other conventional tools, which results in tissue ablation with minimal damage to the adjacent tissue. The combination of these advantages along with the OmniPulse 2.1 μm holmium:YAG laser’s higher energy pulses allow it to ablate tissue more swiftly and easily than the other previously mentioned lasers.
