Abstract

Many of the physical properties of materials can be expressed by relations between tensors. Ohm’s law, for example, describes the electrical conductivity of a material by means of a relation between two vectors, the field strength and the current density. The Navier-Stokes equation, a relation between two second order tensors, specifies the viscous properties of certain materials. Such relations as these are called “constitutive equations”.
