Abstract
After its shaky start, the Hubble Space Telescope now appears to be a success story after all. During its first five years of operation, about 1000 scientific papers based on its observations have been published in the astronomical literature, in addition to numerous newspaper and magazine articles. Observing time remains heavily oversubscribed, and many more scientists apply than can actually be accommodated.
