Abstract
For many years photographic film served as the mainstay of observational astronomy. It is presently being supplemented by the Charge-Coupled Detector (CCD), especially at the limiting magnitudes. The main reasons are much better quantum efficiency and much better linearity, which lead to more sensitive, more quantitative observations. An additional reason is that the data are directly accessible to computers for all sorts of image enhancement and massaging. Economy and freedom from the nuisance of wet processing also play as factors.
