Abstract
Techniques for optical harmonic generation, sum and difference frequency generation have been developed since the beginning of nonlinear optics. Optical frequency division or subharmonic generation, however, has not yet been realized. A device for generating optical subharmonics has recently been proposed in order to produce a train of subfemtosecond pulses [1]. A semiclassical theory of the steady-state and build-up of optical subharmonic oscillations in the device is presented here.
