Abstract

As luck would have it, I decided to learn optics at just the same time that Charlie Townes did—he by teaching the course at Columbia, me by taking it. Almost ready to quit physics in a moment of panic during that course’s uniquely-imaginative open-book final, I managed to garner a respectable grade together with a lifelong admiration for the scientist whom I am privileged to call my teacher.
