Marine Physical Laboratory: A Brief History

It is a pleasure and a privilege to contribute to this volume commemorating Charles Townes’ 80th birthday. One of us (KMW) met Charlie Townes shortly after World War II in the context of some research for the Navy. We had both worked on radar development for the Navy during the War. The association with Charlie Townes continued when we were colleagues at the Physics Department at the University of California (UC), Berkeley. Since my (Watson) transfer to the San Diego campus of the University of California, it has been a pleasure to see Charlie during his visits here.
