Abstract
Charles Townes’s many important discoveries rank him high among the greatest scientists of his generation. Certainly they attest to his extraordinary scientific talents. He has a powerful command of the tools of both theoretical and experimental physics. He also has remarkable personal qualities which have contributed greatly to his success as a scientist, an academic leader, and an advisor to government and industry.
