Macroclimate accounts for the largest share of systematic environmental variation at the macroscale or regional level. At the mesoscale, landform (geology and topography) breaks up the broad patterns. For example, solar energy will be received and processed differently by a field of sand dunes, a lacustrine plain, or an upland hummocky moraine.
