Abstract
This chapter contains the complete specification (due to Gavin Bell, Anthony Parisi, and Mark Pesce) of VRML, the virtual reality modeling language. VRML is to three-dimensional models what HTML is to text.1 It is a text-based language that describes a 3D model and allows hyperlinks to documents of various MIME types. In particular, VRML browsers can call HTML browsers when a VRML link leading to an HTML document is selected. (Similarly, most HTML browsers can be configured to call a VRML client when a VRML document is retrieved from a server.) The long-term goal of VRML is to provide a descriptive language for multi-participant (read multi-player) interactive environments.
