Abstract

Since the 1950s, ultrasonography has gained remarkable acceptance in medicine and surgery for its diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. With new technologic advances its application in medical practice is widening daily, and there are promising opportunities for further developments in diagnostic and therapeutic use. With improvement in resolution and image display capabilities, three-dimensional scanning, tissue characterization, blood flow measurements, and development of contrast media, there is potential for even wider application of ultrasonography, which has already become an indispensable part of medical evaluation and therapy.
