Why are so many organisms sexual? What keeps them competitive with organisms that accomplish the same end through budding or fission? Most biologists explain the existence of traits in organisms on the basis of survival value to the individual or the species (Futuyma 1985). Yet the story of the evolution of reproductive patterns is not clearcut. Our ongoing efforts to understand this process illustrate a key area of research in evolutionary biology today (Margulis and Sagan 1986b).
