Abstract
He lies on his back, belly wrinkled and hard. Ants and flies cling to the carcass as the crows pick and peck. He was a male American toad, the most common amphibian in North America. The species called Bufo americanus is not in danger, but he was. Bad luck. At the age of three years, he had the misfortune to enter a statistical trough, a natural event for all species in all habitats.
