Solids, Liquids, and Surfaces

So far in this part of the book, we have pretended that molecules are small in size (containing no more than a few atoms) and in the aggregate are found only in gaseous phases. It is time now to recognize several important further facts of molecular life—that molecules are also found in solid, liquid, and surface phases, and that they can be large and very large, perhaps containing thousands of atoms. In this chapter we see molecules in solids, in liquids, and on surfaces. The next chapter discusses large-sized molecules (macromolecules).
