When Computers Become Human

  • Chapter
Talking Back to the Machine

Abstract

Our next speaker started out in the personal computer business as a programmer, software designer, marketer, producer and researcher. Her academic background is in theater, with a Ph.D. from Ohio State, so either she’s a gamekeeper turned poacher, or a poacher turned gamekeeper. Either way, she’s going to make you think. She began the main body of her work when she went to Atari in 1982 and started developing software architectures and interfaces for computer-based interactive fantasy systems. Since 1987, she’s worked as a consultant in interactive entertainment and interface designs for clients such as Apple, American Interactive Media, Fujitsu, Carnegie Mellon, Lucas Films, Sony and Paramount. In 1990, she founded Telepresence Research to develop virtual reality and remote-presence technology.
