A simple, thorough clinical breast examination (CBE) is the most important diagnostic technique available to those primary health care providers called on to evaluate the female breast. Whether the examination is for a routine annual physical or for a specific breast complaint, CBE should be performed in the same systematic fashion. The results, including any abnormal findings beyond the limits of normal anatomic and physiologic variation, should be recorded in the patient’s medical record.
