Abstract
Adolescents present to the plastic surgeon for a variety of breast problems, the most common of which are asymmetries secondary to trauma (e.g., burns) and congenital breast asymmetries. Traumatic injury to the developing breast can also result from previous surgeries, can be related to irradiation of the chest wall for treatment of a tumor as an infant, or can result from hemangioma in the surrounding area. Congenital asymmetry should be distinguished from the rare Poland syndrome, which includes not only lack of development of the breast on the affected side but also an associated absence of the pectoralis muscle and occasionally deformities of the hand on the same side. Breast asymmetry is not associated with any anomaly of the reproductive organs.
