Abstract

A woman with a breast mass keenly fears the possibility of having an undiagnosed cancer. Although a physician may have a reasonable clinical impression that a mass is benign (or malignant) based on physical examination, mammography, and even fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, sometimes there is lingering doubt on the part of the physician or the patient. Open surgical biopsy (OSBx) provides a tissue specimen for histologic diagnosis that can definitively determine or exclude the existence of a malignancy.
