Abstract
An “exact” analytical determination of the behavior of a wire rope is very difficult if not impossible. Approximations and assumptions have been made to make an analytical solution tractable. The analytical solution should, therefore, be used only as a guide to predict the response. Many of the assumptions and approximations will be discussed below, and comments will be made concerning some of them, when appropriate. Many of the approximations depend upon the type of loading and the type of construction of the rope’s cross section.
