Abstract
Research in departments of surgery was traditionally funded by transfer of clinical income, especially from high earners, to those doing the research. This system was never really able to fund full-time programs at the best of times. In the current economic climate, departments of surgery can provide only seed money and a modicum of support for 3 years for new faculty surgeons to develop a research program. Beyond that, each laboratory must derive its support from some of the sources described below.
