Abstract
In the bone marrow BFU-E (erythroid burst-forming units), immature progenitor cells, which can differentiate only into erythrocytes, are produced from multipotent stem cells. BFU-E replicate and become erythroblasts by way of CFU-E (erythroid colony-forming units), more mature progenitor cells, and accumulate hemoglobin. Erythroblasts are denucleated in the end and released as reticulocytes into peripheral blood. The hemopoietic factor erythropoietin (EPO) is known to be involved in the later stage of erythropoiesis. It is not considered, however, that erythropoiesis is regulated by single factor, and it was important to elucidate the involvement of another factor.
