Abstract

Throughout gestation the fetus grows and develops in a warm and protected environment. It receives oxygen and nutrients from the mother, across the placenta, via the umbilical circulation and the fluid surrounding the fetus (amniotic fluid) acts as a hydrostatic brace, which protects the fetus from outside physical influences. However, at the time of birth the fetus must have grown and developed, and its physiological systems must be sufficiently mature to survive in the extrauterine environment for a given level of parental care. Clinically, one of the greatest problems facing modern human obstetrics is the premature birth of infants that are too immature to survive in the extrauterine environment without intensive and expensive postnatal treatments.
