Abstract
The ability to differentiate gastrointestinal disease from other sources of chronic pelvic pain is a challenging and complex problem for surgeons, gynecologists, gastroenterologists, and primary care physicians. Because pain sensation from the gastrointestinal tract and other visceral structures within the pelvis is often diffuse and poorly localized, relying on symptoms alone makes it difficult to deterime the origin of lower abdominal and pelvic pain. For that reason, understanding the differences between gastrointestinal and other sources of pelvic pain has important implications for the approach to diagnosis and treatment as well as the prognosis.
