Some Examples of Surfaces

  • Robert Friedman
Part of the Universitext book series (UTX)

In this chapter, we give a leisurely tour of some of the important classes of surfaces: certain blowups of ℙ2, ruled surfaces, and K3 surfaces. Our plan will be to begin with certain linear systems with assigned base points on ℙ2 and then to see where this study leads. Linear systems of plane curves of small degree with assigned base points have been extensively studied and lead to a rich source of surfaces with interesting projective geometry. We will try to touch upon some of these examples where appropriate.
