Abstract

The study of leukemia and lymphoma have always led the way in our understanding of the cellular and now the molecular biology of cancer. Leukemia and lymphoma cells are more readily accessible than are solid tumors. The malignant cells, when present in the blood, can he sampled daily. The Philadelphia chromosome that defines chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) was the first clonal marker discovered in a malignancy (Nowell, 1960). The molecular events underlying the Philadelphia chromosome translocation were one of the first discoveries of a translocated oncogene in human cancer(Groffen et al.,1984.)
