Oncogenes: Control of Cell Growth and Senescence

Abstract

An oncogene is a growth control gene that when mutated “causes” a normal cell to become neoplastic.* In Chapters 1 and 2, we explored basic molecular and cellular biology. A few examples demonstrated how loss of control might lead to unregulated cell proliferation. Now we are ready to get into the molecular biology of cancer at a deeper level. The cell signal pathway is the connection between the DNA in the cell nucleus and regulatory signals from the outside. Most proteins that make up the links in this path are the products of oncogenes. When a cancer cell stops obeying the regulatory signals that make cells function as part of the body, it is due to a mutation in an oncogene. Oncogenes are the central feature in the molecular basis of cancer.
