Abstract
Prior to the launch of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), experimenters on the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) teams anticipated that their instruments would provide useful data on celestial sources. In retrospect, the celestial achievements of these venerable instruments far exceeded anyone’s expectations. The achievements were highlighted by the discovery of γ-rays from the nearby supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud in 1987.
