The Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite enabled solar physicists to gain important insights into the physics of flares and active regions, and although it cannot be said that solutions to all the problems were provided, we now have observational data that go a long way toward constraining theoretical models. With the era of Yohkoh and other high-resolution spacecraft just dawning, there is very real hope that, armed with the SMM findings, we shall at last be able to understand the fundamental mechanisms of solar activity.
