The Frog and Its Spawn

  • J. M. W. Slack

From the time of Aristotle, biologists have wondered how organisms can develop from eggs or seeds. The children’s song

Oats and beans and barley grow

Oats and beans and barley grow

But you, nor I, nor anyone know

How oats and beans and barley grow.

suggests that such knowledge is not for us humble mortals. But academic scientists have large enough egos to think that they can aspire to know even those things formerly reserved for Higher Authority. Since the late nineteenth century, there has been a branch of science called experimental embryology, recently renamed developmental biology, that has been trying to work it all out. In recent years the egos have triumphed over the eggs, and we now have a good idea in principle of how things work, although many details remain to be filled in.
