Many physical problems of interest involve periodic phenomena. In a sense, the widely studied constant coefficient cases are a somewhat extreme example in which the coefficients in the model are periodic with any period one cares to choose. Other problems with periodic coefficients arise from investigating the stability of the oscillator circuits underlying many (all ?) communication systems. The long-standing issues of the stability of planetary orbits also can be approached through analysis of a linearized system with periodic coefficients.
