Tangentially Fired Burners

  • Chapter
Boilers and Burners

Part of the book series: Mechanical Engineering Series ((MES))

Abstract

There are three main methods of firing pulverized coal in a furnace. Based on their orientation in the furnace these are classified into horizontal (opposed jet or front firing), down-shot, and corner firing. The horizontal and down-shot firing burners are described in Chapter 9. The present chapter describes operating principles and design procedures of corner-type burners. These are also called tangential-type burners because here pulverized coal and air are injected tangentially into an imaginary circle in the center from four corners of the furnace. This type was introduced and used by International Combustion in the UK, and ABB Combustion Engineering in the USA. Presently, it is widely used around the world, especially in the boilers designed by ABB Combustion Engineering and their associates.
