Abstract
Anorectal sepsis represents a spectrum of disease commonly encountered in surgical practice. The presentation may be acute in the form of anorectal abscess or chronic as fistula-in-ano, an abnormal communication between the perianal skin and the anal canal or rectal mucosa. The majority of ano-rectal abscesses and fistulae are simple and easily managed. More complex fistulae, however, require a thorough understanding of the etiology and anatomy of anorectal sepsis and a systematic approach to management in order to avoid persistence or recurrence of the fistula or impairment of fecal continence. Though anorectal abscess and fistulain-ano represent sequential manifestations of a common etiology, their presentation and management differ; for practical purposes, they are discussed separately in this chapter.
