Abstract
Atherosclerosis, a chronic disease of the large- and medium-caliber arteries, is currently considered inflammatory. This process, which begins in the intima, includes (1) focal lipid accumulation; (2) cell proliferation; and (3) production and deposition of connectival matrix, which leads to the formation of the fibrous-fatty lesion that evolves into an atheroma. In advanced atheromatous lesions, not only the intima but also the adjacent media and adventitia are involved.
