Part of the Applied Mathematical Sciences book series (AMS, volume 43)

In the previous chapter, we deferred consideration of the situation that occurs when a piston is pushed into a semi-infinite one-dimensional tube containing gas at rest. If the analysis used in Chapter IV when the piston is withdrawn is applied in this case, it leads to a solution which is not single valued and therefore not physically realistic. We first consider an example to clarify the situation.
