Abstract

The concept of duality is of fundamental importance in linear programming. This chapter is devoted to a theoretical treatment of duality with the goal of gaining a greater understanding of the relationships that exist between dual linear programming problems. These relationships, although interesting from a purely mathematical viewpoint, are crucial to many applications, some of which are investigated more deeply in Chapter 5, Chapter 6, and Chapter 7. The treatment of duality presented here is, in large part, due to A.W. Tucker.
