Abstract

The great pre-Columbian civilizations existed in what is now Latin America, whereas north of the present Mexican border, the Amerindians formed few great concentrations of population. Numerical data on pre-Columbian America have been difficult or impossible to obtain; and even in the most favorable case, central Mexico, there has been much dispute about the size of the population before the Spanish conquest.
