Abstract

In Japan, private outpatient clinics play an important role in keeping local people healthy. Their functions and activities differ from hospitals. Moreover, they are usually located in residential areas, and because they look much like local residences, people feel free to visit them and to ask for help not only for their illnesses but also for many problems of their daily lives. In many of these clinics there are specialists in fields such as psychiatry and neurology, who also work as general practitioners. (Anzai 1982).
