Synchronization of Chaotic Systems

Abstract

Synchronization among dynamical variables in coupled chaotic systems would appear to be almost an oxymoron as the definition of chaos includes the rapid decorrelation of nearby orbits due to the instabilities throughout phase space. Nonetheless [FY83, AVR86, PC90], it is quite straightforward to establish situations where synchronization occurs between signals, each of which is chaotic. This synchronization has clear applications to communications [VR93] and control [Pyr92, RTA94]. Further, it may be responsible for the saturation of the invariant characteristics of chaos in chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators and in more complicated systems [GRS84, WR90].
