Abstract
Prior to 1982, the use of computers in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) consisted mainly of centralized mainframe applications supporting payroll, finance, logistics, and the collection of aggregate management information. In 1982, drawing upon a small and dedicated group of developers and medical center workers, the healthcare portion of the VA began an effort that culminated in the deployment of computer hardware and software to every VA medical center (VAMC).
